Since the first debut of the SLT idea in August of 2010, Sony has been able to quickly produce seven different SLT models, which is typical for the company. During this period, the model lineup has grown from two to four different options, and the A37 plays an important part in ensuring that these options are logically ordered. The majority of customers (which is understandable) do not place a high level of importance on product distinction; nonetheless, the A37 contributes to making Sony’s range more cohesive than it has been in a while, which makes it simpler to choose which product is right for you.

The entry-level A35 has been succeeded by the more capable A37, which retains the almost identical chassis as the first-generation A33 and A55 models. The hand grip has been improved by extending the finger grip and making it somewhat deeper, which results in a more comfortable grip overall. In addition to that, Sony has included the updated version of their 16MP sensor, which is the second generation. In addition to this, it incorporates a number of functions that have become standard on more recent, higher-end SLT versions. These functions include lens correction, focus peaking, and the ability to use an electronic first curtain, which reduces shutter latency.

Because of these modifications, the four different models that make up the SLT range are now all based on the same generation of technology. As a result, there are logical improvements in features and capabilities as you progress up the range. The back screen of the A37 has been made smaller in comparison to that of the A35 in order to make the A37 even more distinguishable. It now has a tilt up/down mechanism but has a lower resolution 2.6″ 230k dot panel instead of the 920k dot, 3″ version that the A35 shared with the more costly A57 model. The user will profit from an additional $100 being shaved off the MSRP, which means that the A37 will be introduced at a price that is $150 lower than the price of the original A33.

The A37 now has the enhanced viewfinder optics of the A57, and it is the only SLT that does not record video at 60p. Instead, it offers 60i and 24p as its maximum frame rate settings, both of which have a 24Mbps data transfer rate. The A35 maintains the same continuous shooting speeds as its predecessor, with the camera providing bursts of 7 frames per second at a lower resolution (8.4MP) in a mode that is mostly automated.

The A37 now has the ‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ clever interpolation that was previously only available on the A57, along with the ‘Clear Image Zoom’ that this delivers. It also makes it possible to implement a feature known as “Auto Portrait Framing,” which searches for an appropriate portrait crop in pictures that contain people’s faces and stores an enlarged version of the result alongside the original picture.

The A37 is remarkable in a number of ways, one of which being the extent to which it is able to accept video shooters. It includes dual microphones integrated right into it, as well as a wind-cut filter and the capability to autofocus while you’re filming a movie (with phase-detection AF that should minimize over-shoot). In addition, there is a dual mic input for filming with a greater degree of dedication.

The Sony A37 is a compelling entry-level DSLR camera that outperforms its primary competitors in terms of features, still and video picture quality, as well as overall performance. An otherwise remarkable camera that will more than fulfill the requirements of its intended users is let down by a non-articulating LCD screen that is just a few inches in size and does not support a particularly high resolution.
The A37 is the most affordable SLT camera to date since it combines the majority of the essential capabilities found in its older and larger sibling, the A57, with the more compact body seen in its predecessor, the A33. Thankfully, this has not been accomplished by limiting the capabilities of the A37, with the exception of the LCD screen. The A37 boasts a large list of desired features that belie its relatively cheap price tag. The electronic viewfinder found on the A37 may not have quite the same level of detail as the one found on the A65 and A77 models, but it still has sufficient resolution to compete with and even outperform a more traditional optical viewfinder. The electronic viewfinder (EVF) and transparent mirror of the A37 offer up a whole new world of possibilities for Sony, including rapid burst shooting rates, rapid autofocus for both still images and video, and complete coverage of any situation.
