However, this new version introduces some changes and additions to make for a formidable alternative that is still small for professional photographers who shoot sports and action.
One of the most important improvements is a new mechanical shutter mechanism that enables bursts of 10 frames per second. This is important because if you ever find yourself in a situation where you can’t use the electronic shutter due to the risk of banding or other artifacts, the older model could only muster 5 frames per second, which is not very impressive for a camera that is intended to specialize in sports and action photography. Instead of being best suited for brilliantly lit outdoor locations, this camera is suddenly capable of giving you a reliable burst rate in almost any environment.

The innovative capabilities of its predecessor have been improved upon in the Alpha 9 II by making some further ergonomic adjustments; yet, the device has maintained its amazingly small size and quick processing speed. The focusing technology included with the Sony Alpha 9 Mark II is the most advanced one we’ve used. It has a good-sized grip despite its tiny size, it generates excellent Raw and JPEG files, it has an outstanding battery life, and it captures video in a reliable manner. Having said that, we believe that its video capabilities and back screen may benefit from an upgrade. Furthermore, given that this is a sports camera, people who are searching for the highest possible quality or dynamic range are looking in the wrong place. However, the a9 II meets and, in some cases, exceeds the capabilities of its competitors, and it provides a value that is extremely tempting for photographers who focus on sports and action.
