The Panasonic S5 is a 24 megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera that is based on the same sensor as the Panasonic S1, but it comes in a chassis that is smaller and more reasonably priced. In point of fact, although having a full-frame sensor, the S5 is smaller in every dimension when compared to its brother or sister camera that uses the Micro Four Thirds format, the GH5.

It contains upgrades to Panasonic’s DFD focusing technology, new creative picture modes, and video features that come near to matching both the GH5 and the far more costly S1H, all with the goal of appealing to photographers and filmmakers both.

In contrast to Panasonic’s first-generation full-frame cameras, which were more geared toward a certain market segment, the S5 is more of an all-around generalist. In terms of both its body and its price point, it more directly competes with models such as the Nikon Z6 and the Sony a7 III. It’s a bit like a full-frame GH5 or a tiny S1H for filmmakers, while photographers should benefit from an upgraded autofocus system and a lot of performance advancements that are centered on photography. The Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 provides extensive tools for both still photography and video recording, as well as updates to Panasonic’s DFD contrast-detect-based focusing technology. This is what we have come to anticipate from Panasonic.

The name Panasonic has become almost synonymous with video recording, and the S5 camera is no exception to this trend. In full-frame mode, it can record video at up to 4K/30p (with compatibility for 10-bit 4:2:2 color), and it can record video at up to 4K/60p in APS-C/Super35 mode or in a 1:1 native pixel portion of the sensor (a 1.56x crop). The majority of the capture tools seen on the S1H are also included on the S5, in addition to anamorphic capture; we’ll go into this topic in further detail later on in the review.

The camera enables vertical video recording, and it can automatically identify orientation to ensure that recordings are played back in vertical format. This feature was included in response to shifting preferences in the video industry.

In the same vein as other Lumix models, the S5 utilizes Panasonic’s Depth from Defocus AF system. This system combines the conventional contrast-detect AF with the well-established optical characteristics of each lens in order to determine the distance to the subject and then drive the lens in accordance with that information. The autofocus of phase detect systems is often more sophisticated than those of other types, although Panasonic is still working to improve the technology.

Even though the S5 is not the first Panasonic camera, it is the first full-frame model to have a Live View Composite mode. In this mode, the camera will take a series of photographs either continuously or at predefined intervals up to 8 seconds apart. Any additional light that is detected during each exposure will be added to the final image, but any pixels that do not see a change in brightness will be ignored.

Previous versions of Panasonic’s high-resolution mode left us quite delighted. In this mode, the camera moves the sensor eight times to completely cancel out the Bayer color filter and enhance resolution by a factor of four, reaching 96 megapixels. In contrast to past versions, which could only produce a high-quality Raw file, the S5 is capable of producing an in-camera JPEG image with a resolution of 96 megapixels, which is a new feature.

The picture shaking that can occur in high-resolution cameras is caused by the vibrations that are created by the shutter mechanism. In place of the traditional mechanical shutter, an electronic first curtain shutter, also known as an EFCS, is a frequent solution. However, EFCS is not without its downsides, one of which is that it alters the look of bokeh when the shutter speed is set very high. If all went according to plan, the camera would only utilize the electronic front curtain shutter (EFCS) when it was absolutely necessary to do so, and it would switch back to the mechanical shutter whenever it was not.

The Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 is a full-frame mirrorless camera that performs very well when used for recording video as well as still images. It has a solid construction, is quite portable, and is loaded with features. The image quality is comparable to that of its contemporaries, but the focusing is a step or two below. The Samsung Galaxy S5 has some of the most stunning video functions available on a smartphone currently, and its video quality is also quite good.
